The San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week award presented by Kelly-Moore Paints for Week 5 goes to Ron Myers from Soquel High School.
This past Friday night, Soquel beat Santa Cruz High School 28-21.
The highly anticipated annual battle for “The Stump” between Soquel and Santa Cruz High Schools, lived up to the hype in 2009.
With the game tied at 21 a piece, and a little over a minute left to play, Soquel High RB, Niko Alarcon put together a run that provided a fantastic finish to hard fought game.
With the clock running down, Alarcon took a sweep out to the right and found that there was very little real estate available for him, so he cut across field and decided to try the left side. What he found was room for an untouched 60 yard touchdown run and the game’s deciding score.
Santa Cruz threatened with some 4th quarter heroics of their own, but the Soquel defense would not let this game get away. They held Santa Cruz 45 yards away from tying the game back to secure the win.
With this win, Soquel opens their league play 1-0 and appears to have laid the foundation for a big play offense.
In addition to being named Coach of the Week, Coach Myers and the Soquel High School football program will receive $1,000 from the 49ers Foundation, along with a $500 gift certificate from Kelly-Moore Paints to go towards beautifying Soquel High School.
