On Saturday, May 30, 2009, the Palma High Chieftans came from behind in the bottom of the 7th and scored 3 runs to beat Monte Vista Christian in the Division 3 CCS Champtionship game at San Jose Municipal Stadium, 7-6. It was the first time Palma had won a Baseball CCS Championship in the history of the school. They won a record 26 games under Coach Phil Giammanco this season.

Monterey County is sending 3 boys to the CIF State Championships this year. Michael Skinner of Alvarez and Jake Arveson of Monterey are returning to this elite meet, as both of them qualified last year. Skinner placed 3rd in the 300 hurdles (38.98) to earn a trip to Fresno, while Arveson pulled out a close 2nd place in the 800m, clocking 1:55.45. These speedsters are joined by Salinas High's John Prader who will compete in the pole vault. Prader earned the number one seed for state as he cleared 15'10 and claimed a CCS Title on Friday. The local boys will compete first on Friday in Fresno at Buchanan High School, and if they rank in the top 9 after Friday (June 4th) they will compete Saturday.

At Hartnell College, the Salinas High Bill Kearney Invitation hosted very elite competitors. Despite the national leader in the girl's shot put and discus throwing in the meet, the TCAL showed its dominance. North Salinas boasts an abundant weights program, and 3 girls made the finals in the shot put. Junior Briona Sullen launched a 38'2 mark to clench 3rd place. Senior Adriana Ponce followed at 37'2 to claim 4th place for the Vikings, and teammate Gina Abbott, a senior earned 7th at 32'9 1/4 inches. On the track, two of top state hurdlers dueled it out as Michael Skinner, Alvarez, and Peter Guenther, Gilroy, raced one of the most anticipated races of the day. Skinner clocked a 38.27 to earn the top mark in CCS, while Guenther narrowly placed second in the 300m hurdles with a 38. 27. Salinas High, another TCAL power was represented by John Prader in the pole vault. Prader cleared 15'4 in the vault to launch into 2nd place in the CCS; that was also the meet record. Prader is another very talented hurdler in TCAL, and placed 2nd to Guenther (14.78) in the 110m High Hurdles at 15.09.

Michael Skinner is a senior at Alvarez High School, and leaving his name in the record books. Not only is Skinner setting a trend for the Eagles, but in the league, section, and even nation. While the 300 intermediate hurdles are his specialty, the 400 meters, 110 high hurdles, and relays are other events Michael excels in. The most impressive thing that Michael hones is the national leading mark in the 400 hurdles at 54.44! With hopes of reaching day 2 of the state meet in June, Skinner looks to dominate the TCAL league and clinch a CCS title.

March 31, 2009 - Gilroy Mustangs hand Palma Chieftans their 2nd loss and knock Palma High out of first place in TCAL. Taylor Chris with a key bases-loaded double in the gap to score all three runners gave the Mustangs a 4-0 lead and Gilroy goes on to win 8 to 2 at Palma.

At Oak Grove High School, the North Salinas girls basketball team redeemed themselves in a rematch against Adrian Wilcox during the CCS Division 2 quarter finals. Earlier this season, the Chargers beat the Vikings by 38 points, but that was not the case this time. Bina Abbott and Edthel Lugo lead the scoring for NSHS. A 14-6 first quarter lead evaporated when the Vikings failed to score the entire second quarter. Going into the final eight minutes, the Chargers were up by 4. However, Coach Darren Jackson rallied his squad to earn a victory as the Lady Vikes pulled out a 43-37 victory. North Salinas (No. 5) will take on the Monarchs of Archbishop Mitty (No. 1) Tuesday at Oak Grove at 5:30 PM.

At Independence High School, the Trojans of Alisal took on the Bellarmine Bells in the Central Coast Section quarter final match up. Only down by five (20-15) at halftime, Jordan Ramierz and Johnathan Sosa tried to rally their teammates, but fell short in a 57-37 loss to the No. 2 seed, Bellarmine.
