Merrie Monarch Festival

His name was David Kalakaua, and he was the last king of the Hawaiian Islands. Because of his enthusiastic patronage of music and dance, Kalakaua earned a special nickname. More than 100 years later, Hawaii, and the world - celebrates the memory of the 'Merrie Monarch' at the hula competition that bears his name. The festival is considered the most prestigious hula competition in the world... and High School Playbook is taking you there.  Aloha!

3/15/09 - The Wind (represented by Girls from the Mission Trail Athletic League) took on the Stingrays (represented by Girls from the Monterey Bay and Tri-County Athletic Leagues) at the Pit at Salinas High and the Stingrays dominated 6 to 1 a the 6th Annual Salinas Californian All-Star Classic Soccer Game.

CONGRATS CODY: Cody Rodebaugh a 140 lb junior wrestler at San Lorenzo Valley High in Felton becomes the first State Champion in school history. Cody beat the two top seeds to get to the final and he was a total stud in the tournament:  He had 4 pins and was only taken down once. Rodebaugh one tough customer and the good news for SLV - he'll be back next year.

COWBOYS HAVE FRIENDS: I guess, a huge contingent of fans from Salinas High went to Santa Clara for the CCS title game...The Cowboys got hammered pretty good by Bellarmine but the Salinas fans never let up and and by all reports they had a pretty good time despite the loss....Remember Salinas wasn't even supposed to be in the title game but they had that upset win over the number one seed and that's what they'll remember fondly. Will coach Joe Chappell get a CCS title before he quits coaching?....Yes, in his 39th or 40th year...thats only two years away, hang in there Joe.

TCAL HONORS: Alisal Junior Jonathan Sosa is named the Tri County League MVP in basketball, No argument here.

LEGENDS AT HARTNELL: Two legendary names in sports attended the CCS basketball playoffs at Hartnell College in Saloinas. NFL great Jerry Rice was there for two games to see his son Jerry Rice Jr.play for Menlo School and The grandson of baseball legend Ty Cobb was there to root on his grandson (also named Ty Cobb) who played for Sacred  Heart Prep.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Track & Field - the 1980 CCS Champion in the 400 meter race was Anthony Toney of North Salinas High. I also remember Toney a couple of years later scoring 2 touchdwns in the Cotton Bowl game for Texas A&M as they beat Bo Jackson and Auburn.

2/17/09 - The Palma Chieftan Boy's basketball team clinched their third staight Tri-County Athletic League title as they defeated the North Salinas Vikings, 65-40.  The Chieftans did it with 7 three-pointers in the first half.

The budget picture in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District is grim and the board of trustees is now looking at an expanded list of possible cuts including eliminating close to three hundred jobs.

The Trustees must cut $17 Million  from the Distrcits budget by March 15th and prepare for possible layoffs of 130 teachers, 120 classifed staff 11 administators.

High School sports will likely be eliminated, but it won't be enough.  the District is looking everywhere to balance its books.

The long time football head coach at Carmel High School today announced his resignation.   Craig Johnston stepping down after his team won the league title this past season and made the playoffs for the 8th year in a row. 

Johnston has been the Carmel head coach for the past 17 years; he has 3 sons and all three are either going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or they are already there.  Coach Johnston will remain at Carmel High as a teacher, but now he'll spend his Saturdays down at Cal Poly watching his sons play football instead of coaching in the Mission Trail League.

Coach Johnston was a star quarterback at Cal Poly SLO and led the Mustangs to a Division 2 National title in 1980.

Coaches who stick around 17 years are hard to find and Coach Johnston will certainly be missed at Carmel High.

 Wednesday January 28, 2009 was named Monica Abbott Day at North Salinas High School. The softball superstar, Abbott, graduated from North High in 2003 and has made a name for herself since leaving the Vikes. First Abbott went to the University of Tennessee where she claimed the college strikeout record. Then this past summer Abbott propelled Team USA to a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nothing short of amazing, Monica took the time to come back to NSHS and share her advice and experiences with the students.
